Is Thinning Hair a Natural Process?

hair-loss_brush

Baldness is basically a genetic predisposition. Thinning of hair is part of this natural process, which follows a typical pattern. Initially hair loss starts at the temples and the hair at the crown starts thinning. If not checked in time, thinning hair leads to partial or complete baldness.

Natural hair loss is commonly associated with the sensitivity of hair follicles to hormones, especially an androgen called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). For baldness to occur there has to be a genetic predisposition, high levels of male hormones (androgens) and also the DHT has to have time to impact the hair follicles negatively. It is believed that this ‘male-pattern baldness’ is a natural process and does not occur due to something that you do or apply on your hair.

However, a small majority of people experience thinning hair also due to reasons other than the natural hair loss. These reasons include deficient nutrition, unhealthy lifestyles, stress, illnesses and hormones. There may also be other man-made causes behind why your hair thins, for example, the harsh chemicals used in most hair care products.

Hair care is an important part of our daily routines. There are various products available for hair care today - hair color for coloring or streaking hair, shampoos that range from mild ones to those based on detergents, gels that help in styling, conditioners to smoothen hair after a wash and even products that help in straitening or obtaining a higher buoyancy for hair. Harsh chemicals and detergents used in these products are a major cause of thinning hair and are bound to affect hair health. This is not to discredit the use of hair care products but to warn against the excessive use of chemicals. Under the guise of hair care and hair styling we tend to forget what we putting on our hair.

Although thinning hair and natural hair loss promoted by the genes cannot be reversed, there are various ways in which you can protect your hair by choosing products that are gentle on hair. For preventing thinning hair and hair loss the growing trend is to use anti-DHT products that were actually meant for other ailments and have hair growth as a side effect. These drugs have other side effects too and can cause more problems than they are supposed to cure. Natural hair care products are safe as they contain ingredients that do not cause harm to hair follicles and help in strengthening the hair shaft as well.
